A Message from the Principal

Dear ALH Students & Families,

I am honored to be returning to the Albany Leadership Charter High School for Girls as the school’s new principal! As many know, I was the dean of academics and interim principal from 2014-2016 and thus have a keen understanding of our daughters’ aspirations, goals, and unlimited potential. Over the past 10 years, I have fought to ensure students under my purview not only had access to a relevant, rich curriculum aligned to rigorous instruction, but also made sure to challenge the status quo to enrich my students’ academic, social, and/ or emotional experiences. I will challenge our daughters at ALH to fulfill our mission by obtaining leadership skills necessary to be successful beyond high school and, upon graduation, our daughters will demonstrate college and career readiness as measured by targeted performance benchmarks.

My passion for education started in 2008, when I graduated from the State University of New York at Brockport as a certified English teacher. Two year later I received my Master’s Degree in Special Education from St. John Fisher College and soon thereafter earned a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership. During this journey I was first employed as an English and special education teacher, instructional coach, and administrator at the first charter high school in Rochester, NY and then was the principal of a 7-12 Special Acts School outside of Ithaca, NY for county and court-placed youth from nearly every county in New York State. Most recently, I was the Leadership Academy principal at Albany High School and thus already know many of our ALH families and friends!

I decided to return to ALH for two specific reasons. First, I knew that the young women attending ALH were committed to realizing their full potential as ALH families are known to be engaged, devoted, and faithful to the ALH mission rooted in leadership and college and career readiness. Secondly, the staff of ALH are not only dedicated and unwavering in their high expectations, but are committed to skillfully balancing these important expectations with a sense of love, respect, and honesty – values integral to the growth of our school’s community. I am confident that under the purview of ALH’s dedicated staff, our daughters will continue to flourish as we challenge ourselves to provide a world class education to our girls, right here, in the heart of Albany.

I am excited to partner with you and look forward to taking this journey together! Please do not hesitate to reach out should you like to connect in more detail.

Respectfully yours,

William S. Rivers
