Students who have demonstrated exemplary leadership ability through their academic performance qualify to take part in Albany Leadership’s tutoring program as Academic Mentors. As an Academic Mentor, students will grow academically and socially through tutoring and mentoring their fellow students. Participating students will enjoy a rewarding experience which will assist them in their college studies as well as their career. The purpose of the program is to improve our students’ academic performance while also building a tight-knit community where students are provided the opportunity to grow through a rich leadership experience. The program also strives to establish a culture of mutual support between students. At Albany Leadership Charter High School for Girls, our students practice what we preach daily as they are their sisters’ keeper, encouraging one another to strive upwards towards a college degree and success in the career of their choosing.
Academic Mentors also fulfill their service learning requirement for an Albany Leadership Charter High School diploma.
All students are eligible to receive tutoring support and all are encouraged to do so. A simple tutoring request form is made available to all students and parents who would like to receive tutoring. Effective tutoring support is provided for Advanced Placement courses as well as regular core-courses, as experience has shown all of our students benefit from individual attention and one-on-one academic support in their coursework. Extensive tutoring support is also available for ESL as well as ELL students, some of whom have been successful enough to eventually become Academic Mentors themselves.
Several different types of tutoring support are available. Academic Mentors who are trained to peer-tutor are a popular choice by many students who report great pleasure in hearing the perspective of a student who was highly successful in their course. Many students show remarkable progress as a result of this positive peer support, not only academically, but with organizational skills and study habits as well. It should be said, many great friendships have also begun in the tutoring program as a result of students successfully collaborating and practicing real teamwork to achieve their goals in harmony.
Additionally, students also may work with experienced adult educators who are available during as well as after school hours. Albany Leadership Charter High School has developed strong partnerships with several local colleges and universities whose students eagerly mentor and tutor Albany Leaderships’ students and become an integrated part of our community–modeling for their younger high school peers the path to college success.
