English as a Second Language Program
At Albany Leadership Charter High School for Girls, educating and developing global citizens is an integral component in preparing our students for college. Our diverse student population includes students who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Within this program, English Language Learners (ELLs) receive instructional support in developing their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills that will support their academic and social language development. Students in our program also receive additional support in their diverse academic coursework. Our ESL Program strives to instill young ladies with the confidence and exuberance needed for learning a second language in a new country and educational environment, while preparing them to be successful in meeting school, state, and college academic expectations. While it is critical that students utilize their English skills outside of school, our program also encourages students to continue to develop their native language skills.
The ALH ESL Program is grounded in the New York State Educational Learning Standards, which can be accessed at the following site: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/biling/resource/ESL/05Com.pdf.
